Walking Pad Calorie Calculator

Estimate how many calories you burn on a walking pad from your body weight, speed, incline and walking time. The calculator also shows the extra calories above resting, which is the part that matters for weight management.

Calculate your walking pad calories

142 kcalTotal per session
100 kcalExtra above resting per session
500 kcalExtra per week
2.5 kmDistance per session

Estimates only, for walking speeds of about 2 to 7 km/h. Default values show an 80 kg adult walking for 30 minutes at 5 km/h with no incline.

Rounded estimates in kcal, calculated with the ACSM walking equation.

How the calculator works

The calculator uses the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) walking equation, which estimates oxygen use from walking speed and incline:

Oxygen use (ml/kg/min) = 3.5 + 0.1 × speed + 1.8 × speed × incline

Speed is in metres per minute and incline is a fraction (5% = 0.05). Each litre of oxygen used is counted as about 5 calories. The first 3.5 is your resting energy use, so the extra figure leaves it out.

Why incline makes such a difference

At the same speed, a 5% incline adds more energy cost than speeding up from 4 to 6 km/h on the flat. That is why incline is useful at a desk, where walking faster is harder while you work.

Limitations

  • The equation is designed for walking at roughly 3 to 6 km/h. Very slow or very fast speeds are less accurate.
  • It assumes steady walking without holding the handrail. Holding on reduces the real effort.
  • Individual fitness, walking style and body composition change the true figure. Treat results as a guide, not an exact count.
  • Different methods give different answers. Our 10,000 steps calorie table uses activity MET values, so its figures differ slightly.

What the numbers mean for weight

The extra per week figure is the useful one for weight management, because it is the energy you would not have used sitting down. Whether it leads to weight loss depends mostly on what you eat, as extra activity can also raise appetite.

A walking pad can help increase daily movement and may support weight management when combined with sustainable nutrition, sleep and activity habits. For realistic expectations, read our guide to losing weight with a walking pad and how long walking pad results take.

Health note

This calculator gives general estimates, not medical advice. If you have a health condition, are pregnant or are new to exercise, check with your GP before starting a new routine, especially before using steep incline.

Walking pad calorie calculator FAQ

How many calories does 30 minutes on a walking pad burn?

For an 80 kg adult, about 120 to 160 calories in total at 4 to 6 km/h on the flat, and around 230 calories at 5 km/h with a 5% incline. Lighter people burn less and heavier people more.

Is the walking pad’s own calorie display accurate?

Often not. Many walking pads estimate calories without knowing your weight, so the figure can be well off. A calculator that uses your weight, speed and incline is usually closer.

Does incline burn more calories on a walking pad?

Yes. At 5 km/h, a 5% incline adds roughly 60% more calories than walking on the flat, according to the ACSM walking equation.

What does “extra above resting” mean?

It is the energy used by walking on top of what your body would use anyway sitting still. It is the more useful figure when thinking about weight.
